HOTEL NEAR KILMAINHAM GAOL
Kilmainham Gaol is a must for any history enthusiasts.
This is the site of where the 1916 leaders were executed and the site of where many Irish nationalist leaders were imprisoned for years by the British Authorities at that time. The building symbolises the tradition of militant and constitutional nationalism from the rebellion of 1798 to the Irish Civil War of 1922-23.
The biggest unoccupied gaol in Ireland, it gives its visitors a realistic insight into what it was like to have been confined in one of these institutions of punishment.
Kilmainham Gaol is a must see for any tourist or visitor wanting to have an insight into Dublin’s deep history.
“Numbers of these wretched creatures are obliged to lie on straw in the passages and dayrooms of the prison without a possibility of washing or exchanging their own filthy rags for proper apparel… Upon the necessity of passing this Act, it is not our place to pass an opinion, but of its effect upon the condition of the gaols we are painfully conscious. The committing of vagrants led to the introduction of fever and dysentery into a crowded prison and the sacrifice of many lives.” – Report of the Inspector General, 1847
Kilmainham Gaol Museum is open all year round, except the 24th, 25th, and 26th of December. Prices are cheaper online but can be bought on the day at the gaol also – Online prices are €7 (adult), €5 (senior), €3 (child/ student), €15 (family).
